EIDBI Services
At Ability Avenues, our EIDBI program supports children and young adults with autism. We focus on building communication, social, and behavioral skills, helping each child reach their full potential and empowering families along the way. Our EIDBI programs support kids in the Minneapolis Area.
What is EIDBI?
The Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention (EIDBI) program is designed to support children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related conditions. Through evidence-based therapies, the program focuses on improving communication, social interaction, and adaptive skills. Services are tailored to each child’s unique needs, with goals that enhance their development and independence. The EIDBI program also provides guidance and training for families, creating a collaborative approach to support each child’s growth and long-term success.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services approved of five treatment modalities for EIDBI services. These modalities are:
ABA
Builds communication and social skills through positive reinforcement.
DIR Floortime
Build off the interests and skills of the individual through engaging play.
RDI
Strengthens social and emotional skills with parent-led activities
ESDM
Blends play and ABA for young children to develop language and social skills.
Play Project
Enhances social, language, and cognitive skills through structured, playful interactions
Understanding EIDBI
The Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention (EIDBI) program emphasizes a holistic approach to supporting children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related conditions. By integrating various therapeutic modalities, EIDBI creates a rich, individualized learning environment that addresses each child’s unique strengths and challenges. Early intervention is a cornerstone of this program, as research shows that timely support can lead to significant developmental gains and improved outcomes.

Families play an integral role in the EIDBI process, fostering a collaborative atmosphere that empowers parents to be active participants in their child's development. Through training and support, families learn to implement strategies and techniques at home, reinforcing the skills taught during therapy sessions. This partnership not only enhances the child's learning experience but also strengthens the family’s ability to navigate the challenges of ASD.

In addition to skill development, the EIDBI program focuses on promoting emotional well-being and social engagement. Therapists work to build strong relationships with children, creating a safe and nurturing environment that encourages exploration and growth. By fostering social connections and emotional resilience, EIDBI aims to set a solid foundation for lifelong success and independence in various aspects of life, from academics to social interactions.

EIDBI vs ABA
EIDBI (Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention) and ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) are related but distinct approaches for supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). EIDBI offers a broader framework that includes various therapies—like ABA, DIR/Floortime, and the Early Start Denver Model—aimed at fostering comprehensive development in communication, social skills, and emotional well-being. In contrast, ABA focuses specifically on using behavioral principles to teach and reinforce positive behaviors while addressing challenging ones. While ABA is data-driven and emphasizes measurable outcomes, EIDBI prioritizes individualized, holistic support, ensuring each child receives tailored interventions across multiple developmental areas.
